Police Minister Fikile Mbalula visited Nyanga Mall on Tuesday after a 12-hour standoff between police and robbers took place on Monday.

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula visited Nyanga Mall on Tuesday, after a 12-hour standoff between police and robbers took place on Monday.

Ten employees of Shoprite were held hostage, a shoot-out ensued where a suspect died, and a security guard died later on in hospital after being wounded during the shootout.

Mbalula, speaking to reporters, said that security around social grant payouts needs to be tightened. “From the police point of view, we should have been ready to monitor that situation. We don’t need to react. We need to sharpen our machinery in relation to crime prevention [sic]. That is what’s important.”

In a report by EWN, the minister stressed the police service’s commitment to fighting crime by reminding all that “those boys who are trying criminality are too weak for the task force.”

Police are still investing the incident.
