Clooney joins fight to prosecute war criminals

Hollywood actor George Clooney has joined the fight to prosecute those who finance and benefit from conflict in Africa by donating to The Sentry Campaign.

Hollywood actor George Clooney has joined the fight to prosecute those who finance and benefit from conflict in Africa by donating to The Sentry Campaign.

The actor issued a statement, explaining his decision to donate $1-million (more than R14-million) to the campaign.

“Our focus is to make sure that war crimes don’t pay. We want to make it more difficult for those willing to kill en masse to secure their political and economic objectives,” Clooney’s statement read.

“When we’re able to go after the warlords’ wallets and bankrupt those who choose the bullet over the ballot, suddenly the incentives are for peace, not war; transparency, not corruption,” he said.

Clooney’s announcement is not all that surprising. The actor has a history of getting involved in politics.

In 2006, he lobbied the United States government to intervene in the Darfur crisis in 2006, when Barack Obama was still a senator.

In 2011, a report by Newsweek revealed that the actor had been involved in a project using satellites to monitor military movement across the border between Sudan and South Sudan.
