New Hawks head appointed

The position of acting head of South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, will be filled by deputy commissioner Yolisa Matakata.

The position of acting head of South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, will be filled by deputy commissioner Yolisa Matakata.

The announcement was made by newly appointed Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, on Thursday.

Provisions in the South African Police Services Act allowed for the deputy of the Hawks to step in as acting head of the unit.

Mbalula had to make the appointment following Wednesday’s High Court ruling that Berning Ntlemeza may no longer serve in that capacity.

The ruling was made after courts in 2015 found that Ntlemeza lied under oath and lacked integrity.

Matakata will serve in the role until further notice.
