Conservation efforts were dealt another telling blow this week, after a precious white lion was killed at Makhado in the Limpopo province on new year’s eve.
The lion was killed at one of the game lodges in the area, after the suspected poachers threw poisoned meat into the lion’s enclosure. The white lion ate the meat and died instantly. Authorities confirmed that the suspected poachers were after the lion’s paws, among othet things.
“The suspects cut the paws, head and even attempted to remove the skin of this lion before they fled the scene,” said police spokesman Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.
Makhado police have since made two arrests in connection with the crime, the latest being that of a 28-year-old man who will appear in the Bochum Magistrate’s Court this week. They have been charged with the unlawful hunting of a special protected species.
“The Police were notified, reacted swiftly and an intensive investigation ensued until the first suspect was arrested which was followed by the arrest of this second one,” added Ngoepe.
Police believe two suspects are still at large.
