A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping an 11-year-old girl in 2016.
Mondli David Ndlovu, a former Durban University of Technology student, was convicted by Sexual Offences Court.
In 2016, Ndlovu asked the victim to fetch a cellphone charger at his home not far away from where she lived. When the girl couldn't find the charger, she decided to go back to her house.
"On her way back to her home, she met the accused who was waiting for her along the way. The accused grabbed her and forced her to go with him to his uncle’s house in the area where she was raped," a police statement read.
The girl told her siblings about what had happened and they reported the incident to the police.
Shortly after, the accused was traced and arrested.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, said "The sentence will serve as a warning to other criminals who are thinking of committing such crimes. I also thank the witnesses who were brave enough to give evidence that assisted in convicting."
