The South African Revenue Services fully supports senior official Jonas Makwakwa despite the fact that he is being investigated for criminal actions.
Sars spokesperson Luther Lebelo told Radio 702’s Karima Brown on Wednesday evening that the service can only investigate misconduct committed by their employees.
“The only thing we can investigate on employees in misconduct, the Tax Administration Act regulates our relationship with the citizens of the country as taxpayers,” he told Brown.
Makwakwa was placed on paid leave following allegations of misconduct but has since returned to work.
He still, however, faces investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in South Africa (better known as the Hawks).
The Hawks are conducting a criminal investigation into Makwakwa for unusual payments connected to him and his partner, Kelly-Ann Elskie.
Elskie, incidentally, is also a SARS employee.
