Man gets life for raping three victims

A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping three victims.
Sipho Bhekinkosi Shandu was convicted in the Durban High Court.
The first incident occurred in 2012. Shandu entered the 19-year-old victim's home in Sundumbili. He then dragged her to a nearby sugarcane field and raped her.
Shandu also raped a 17-year-old girl in the Samungu area, Eshowe. He entered her home and dragged her to a sugarcane field and raped her. He also threatened to burn the victim, but she managed to escape and reported the crime.
The man later raped a 33-year-old victim in Mount Moriah, Phoenix.
Shandu was arrested in 2013. According to a police statement, "Through DNA, he was linked to Sundumbili and Eshowe incidents. He appeared in court several times until he was sentenced and convicted by the Durban High Court."
“I would like to praise our detectives for gathering full evidence and brought it to court which led to the successful prosecution of the accused. I welcome the sentence handed down to the accused and we hope that it will send a strong message to other rapists that the long arm of law will catch you whenever and wherever you are,” KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa said.
