20kg of rhino horn found at OR Tambo Airport
Police efforts to curb crime in and around OR Tambo airport are bearing fruit, with amongst others, a woman arrested with 20kg of rhino horn in her possession.
Police say that efforts to stop crime in and around Johannesburg's busy OR Tambo International Airport are starting to bear fruit after a woman was arrested on Wednesday with 20kg of rhino horn in her possession.
Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said in a statement that the woman, 24, had arrived on a flight from Lusaka, Zambia on Tuesday night, and was due to catch a connecting flight on South African Airways to Hong Kong.
Police found 11 pieces of rhino horn in her bag, which was intercepted in the luggage transfer area of the international arrivals terminal.
The woman is set to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Thursday, facing charges under the Endangered Species Act.
Aside from intercepting a potential rhino horn smuggler, Brigadier Vishnu said that police plans to make the airport safe has already foiled one attempted robbery in the cargo terminal.
He also said that no further incidents of people being followed home from the airport and robbed have been reported.
