Gender commission lashes Zapiro for rape cartoon
The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has come out strongly against Zapiro’s latest cartoon.
The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has come out strongly against Zapiro’s latest cartoon.
The commission said the depiction of rape in the cartoon is highly inappropriate, given the country’s high rates of sexual violence.
Jonathan Shapiro’s (better known as Zapiro) latest cartoon depicts President Jacob Zuma zipping up his pants after presumably raping a woman, and hands her to a Gupta brother. The president’s allies are drawn holding the woman down. The woman, dressed in the flag of South Africa, represents South Africa.
The CGE reprimanded Zapiro for the cartoon, saying that rape can never be normalised and that using the word loosely adds to the trauma of rape survivors.
eNCA reported that crime statistics for 2016 indicated that more than 50 000 rapes were reported.
Zapiro’s defence for the cartoon is that the current political climate warrants the metaphor.
