Love triangle killer sentenced to life in prison

Clifford Mthembu, who was convicted for the murder of two men and theft, was sentenced to life in prison by the Durban High Court this week.

Clifford Mthembu, who was convicted for the murder of two men and theft, was sentenced to life in prison by the Durban High Court this week.

Mthembu (40) committed the crime in February 2015, and families of the victims finally got closure after a protracted legal process this week.

Central to this case was a love triangle involving Mthembu, another man Ayanda Khati and Mthembu’s girlfriend, whose name is being protected in this case. She was the complainant in the theft case.

“The incident occurred in the Verulam area and on the day the accused approached the complainant about the affair.

“In a fit of rage the accused drove off in the complainant’s car which contained her cellphone, a tablet device and an amount of R1000,” said NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara.

“The accused then phoned Khathi and questioned him about the affair. After failing to get a response from him, the accused used the complainant’s tablet to message the man. The accused pretended to be the complainant and told Khathi that she was assaulted by the accused and needed a lift home.

“Khathi arranged with his brother to go and fetch the complainant. Khathi’s brother went along with a friend of his. The two men were thus lured to an area called Sand Pitt where the accused killed them thinking that they were Khathi and another person. The deceased were also robbed of their cellphones.”

“State Advocate Krishen Shah led cell phone evidence that linked the accused to the crime. Further, the complainant’s belongings were found at the accused’s mother’s house. Adv. Shah also led the testimony of mothers of the deceased.”
