Gauteng police have confirmed that some of the 20 prisoners have been re-arrested after they escaped when the vehicle they were being transported in was ambushed on Tuesday.
The police’s Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that the prisoners were being taken back to ‘Sun City’ prison on Tuesday afternoon when the incident took place.
Dlamini confirmed that members of the public assisted police in nabbing the prisoners.
“The members of the public came up with the information but I don’t have to mention those particular members of the community who came forward.”
He went on to say, “We consider some of these criminals to be armed, and we are warning the members of the public not to confront them if they see them, but they must contact crime stop on 0860 10111.”
The suspects were armed with rifles. Dlamini said that one of the suspects broke the lock and freed the prisoners.
SA Police Service posted images of the prisoners on Twitter on Wednesday.
