WC ANC wants more done for education

The African National Congress in the Western Cape believes the provincial government is not doing enough for education.

The African National Congress in the Western Cape believes the provincial government is not doing enough for education.

The ANC urged the Western Cape government to release more funds to resource schools in areas where there is high gang activity and improve security and ensure a proper learning environment.

The party’s Theo Oliver accused the provincial government of not doing enough.

“Firstly I think the crime at schools is a key risk. If you look at the daily reports on how the learners are being stabbed at school,” Oliver said.

The ANC was responding to the province’s medium term budget policy delivered by Finance MEC Ivan Meyer on Thursday.

The Democratic Alliance-led government in the province has listed education as one of its strategic provincial goals, allocating more than R20-million to it for the 2017/2018 financial year.

Some of that funds have been allocated to implement programmes in poor areas and expand existing school safety projects.
