The UK government’s own Open Data platform, data.gov.uk, has suffered a data breach, with the email addresses, usernames and hashed passwords of registered users leaked online.
The database of website login details was discovered on a public platform during a routine security review, prompting the Government Digital Service (GDS) to immediately inform the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office of the breach. The platform’s users are also being forced to change their passwords before they can continue using the website.
“It was very recently discovered, and action was taken to notify users, and the information commissioner’s office, as soon as possible”, a GDS spokesperson said.
Data.gov.uk is an Open Data platform that was launched by the British government in January 2010 in order to create greater transparency around government data.
